Embroidering + appliqué for a mini quilt using mySewnet & SINGER MOMENTO 24

In my first blog post this week, I planned my mini-quilt challenge in the mySewnet Quilting Software and printed a yardage/cutting chart. In my second blog post using this yardage chart, I created the cut files, for the SINGER MOMENTUM 24. Today, I’m embroidering the 5 white squares left on the PFAFF creative expect 350.

But first, I must create the embroidery files. I plan to put my grandson’s name and birthdate in the center of the mini-quilt, and I have something special planned for the other 4 blocks. I could create the center block on the machine, but since I have Silver mySewnet software, I choose to do it in the software, I have more fonts, a keyboard to type on, and a mouse when I make a mistake. PLUS, old habits die hard; I have always created in the software and then sent it to the machine…

My center block is a 6” finished square, so the 4” x 4” is the one I’ll create from. Open mySewnet Silver Software, select the view tab, choose change hoop, go to your machine and choose your hoop. Don’t forget to make your grid 1” [25mm]. Why do you ask? Most of us can visualize a 1” square, but a 10mm square, mmm. Maybe it’s just me showing my age, but I still translate between inches and mm.

I’ll keep my embroidery design within this hoop so I can embroider it out nicely AND because it will fit in the quilt block with enough room around the edges. I played with the lettering fonts and sizes until I found something simple, and I ended up with his name using the “kids” font from the children’s section and the font “Ban” from the Modern for the date. I plan to embroider in a mid-blue color like the main fabric, bold enough to see but not startling. Well, that’s the plan; when it’s done, I may have to redo, make the letters smaller, change the color, etc., until it’s done and on the design wall. Who knows?

Now that we are in mySewnet Embroidery Software I want to show you why I didn’t put away my SINGER MOMENTO 24 yesterday.  I changed my hoop to the 170X100mm and selected rotated, to get a side view. Next, I go to the SuperDesign tab and find a dinosaur, specifically an applique stegosaurus. No, not the scary one. This is for a child.

I did not change the default size but brought it into the hoop. In the next step, I selected the design, right-clicked and brought up the “change the applique fabric”, why? You ask because I can, and it helps me visualize how I’ll color and change it. I changed applique fabric 1 to royal blue, 2 to mid-blue and 3 to mint green (like the fabrics I have). I then fixed the stitches. Setting the size of the design. Now I can go in and swap out thread colors to blend with the fabrics. I also changed the tail spikes to royal, the eyes to navy from black and finally, since my focus fabric, stegosaurus, had polka dots, I want to add some of these as well. A friend once taught me to select a “period” and then experiment with the fonts until I found a shape and size that worked for me. I chose the font Challenge under Fun at the default size and then brought in a few (11) and mixed them up color-wise and placement until I was happy. I remembered to save, then combine, and color sorted for the best stitch out.

Finally, I had to export the applique pieces SVG files (the trick here is to remember where you export them to on your computer!) so I could cut them out with the SINGER MOMENTO 24. To create this cutting file, you open the mySewnet Crafting software, choose the 12 x 12 mat, then at the top left under file, choose insert, and one of the SVGs select “cut” from the menu and take onto the mat, duplicate (until I have enough) and then group. Finally, I make them the color I want to cut the fabric from (to keep me from getting mixed up). I continue until I have all the pieces done.

Note: I went back and mirrored the dino to the right so I could have a left-facing dino and a right-facing dino and made 3 sets of applique for each so I can decide later what I will use where. Before I cut the fabric, I fused HeatNBond Lite to the back of each fabric and then cut, leaving the paper on the fabric side up using a “linty” ( has lost some stick, so the paper will come off easily) gray standard mat.

Now, back to the SINGER MOMENTUM 24 to cut all these fiddly little pieces of fusible appliques for my embroidery.

Now the SINGER MOMENTO 24” Cutting Machine can be stored away. I’ll find embroidery thread to match my fabric and designs and start embroidering on the PFAFF creative expect 350. But that’s tomorrow’s job. Join me tomorrow, as I embroider and piece the mini quilt.
