Exclusive SINGLE Ribbon Stitch Techniques on the PFAFF creative icon 2

by Olesya Lebedenko

Yesterday, we looked at the Exclusive Ribbon Stitch Techniques on the PFAFF creative icon 2.
Today we’ll take our first step into the world of dimensional embellishment using Single Ribbon Stitches.

Two stitched ribbon samples on denim created using the PFAFF creative icon 2. The left sample features Single Ribbon Stitch #8 stitched with narrow variegated ribbon. The right sample showcases a decorative zigzag stitch (Stitch #2) paired with layered 3mm ribbons and yellow accent thread. Also pictured: 2A Fancy Stitch Foot, rotary cutter, Mettler 40wt polyester thread, scissors, marking pencil, and decorative ribbon spools. All materials are arranged on a white rustic wood background.

What You’ll Need

  • Foot 2A Fancy Stitch Foot
  • Fabric A 10” x 2½” strip of stabilized cotton or denim
  • Ribbon or Lace 15” length

TIP For single ribbon stitches, add about 5″ to your fabric length to estimate how much ribbon you’ll need.

Let’s set up the machine. From the Welcome Screen, tap Sewing Mode, then click the Load Stitch icon. Scroll to Category #8 – Techniques, and select 8.1 – Single Ribbon Stitches. To load a stitch, simply double-tap on the one you’d like to use. For today’s demo, I picked Stitch #8.

Attach the 2A Fancy Stitch Foot, and make sure the “Needle Down” feature is activated and  IDT system is disengaged. You can check your active features and recommendations in the upper-left corner of the screen.

And here’s one more brilliant thing I have to highlight, something I absolutely love about the PFAFF creative icon 2. When planning your project and wondering about the best stitch width or setup, you don’t need to open a manual or search the Help Center. Just tap the stitch, then tap the “?” icon in the top right corner, and tap the stitch again. A pop-up window will appear with all the essential recommendations right there on the screen!

The user points to Stitch #8 from the 8.1 Single Ribbon Stitches subcategory using a stylus. The left panel displays the recommended presser foot (2A without IDT), the active stitch (8.1.8), and enabled features including “Needle Down” and “Tie-Off Beginning”.

The pop-up gives detailed instructions for using single ribbon stitches, including folding and guiding the ribbon manually while stitching. Ribbon stitches work a little differently than regular decorative stitches: you’ll guide the ribbon manually into place as the machine stops, and then continue stitching in short steps.

To help keep your stitching straight and centered, draw a guideline on your fabric using chalk or a water-soluble marker.

Another helpful tip: use the built-in ruler on the PFAFF accessory tray to double-check the width of your ribbon or lace. Make sure it fits within the recommended range for your selected stitch, this helps ensure smooth movement and beautiful, even results.

A fine chalk or water-soluble marker line has been drawn to guide the stitching path, helping to keep the decorative ribbon stitches straight. The feed dogs and throat plate markings are clearly visible, providing additional support for precision. This step sets up the base stitch path before the ribbon is manually added and stitched down in controlled segments using the Start/Stop button instead of the foot pedal.

We’re all set and ready. Now just let the PFAFF creative icon 2 work its magic! One more fantastic feature of these exclusive stitches—you don’t even need to touch the foot pedal. Simply press the Start/Stop button and follow the prompts on screen.

The machine will sew a short section and then automatically pause. That’s your cue to guide the ribbon: place it in front of the needle at the same angle as the initial part of the stitch. Press Start again to continue.

The machine has completed the initial short section of stitching and paused automatically, as part of the programmed sequence. The white decorative thread is visible on the denim fabric, aligned with the center guide of the presser foot, ready for the next step.

When it stops a second time, fold the ribbon over the previous stitching, firmly but gently, making sure it sits directly in front of the needle. Press Start and continue.

Repeat this process, placing and folding the ribbon as the machine pauses, until you reach the end of your design.

The 2A Fancy Stitch Foot gives you a clear view of each step, and as seen in the last photo, from behind the foot you can admire how beautifully the ribbon is shaped with each repeat.

That’s a wrap for today’s ribbon stitching session! You’ve just added a beautiful layer of dimension using the Single Ribbon Stitch—and all without ever touching the foot pedal. The PFAFF creative icon 2 takes care of the movement while you guide the ribbon into place, one graceful fold at a time.

It’s a great moment to explore a few other stitches in this category. Each one has its own rhythm and flow. For those “dancing” designs like Stitch #2 or #15, a simple satin ribbon highlights the beauty of the stitch path. If you’re drawn to using fancy lace instead, go with a narrower one—nothing wider than 3 mm. That way, the lace adds charm without hiding the elegant curves of the stitch.

Join me tomorrow, we’ll dive into Double Ribbon Stitches, where two folds bring twice the texture and detail.

I can’t wait to show you what’s next!

Always yours,

Olesya
