Yesterday I finished my first crumb quilt project using the Brother Innov-ís BQ3050 machine.

Today, I’ll show another project using the same crumb quilting technique, but this time I’ll be using dark-colored scraps. The batiks are so easy to use in a project like this, as the edges don’t fray or stretch. This is really important because of all the bias edges that occur when crumb quilting.
Here are the basics for creating the crumb blocks, but please refer back to the QUILTsocial blog posts on Days 1 and 2 from this week for more detailed instructions. Here’s a good video you might like to watch for an introduction to the crumb quilting technique.
Starting a crumb quilt project
- Start by sewing 2 small scraps together to make several 2 patch blocks. The scraps can be as small as 1½” square for this technique. Use squares, strips or any odd-shaped pieces you have.
Sew small scraps together to make 2 patch blocks.
- Sew 2 patch blocks together to make 4 patch blocks.
- Sew 4 patch blocks together to make 8 patch blocks.
- As you finish each set of blocks, straighten one edge so it’s ready to sew to the next set.
- Keep adding pieces until you have created a new piece of fabric in the size you want.

In the last project, I cut my crumb fabric into 6½” blocks, but this time I’m using my new fabric to make borders. I want my borders to be 2½” x 8½”, so that’s a guide for how big to make my crumb fabric pieces.

I’m making 3 – 8½” blocks that look like this:
