It’s never too early for Holiday Season sewing!

Look what arrived a few weeks ago – this great collection of ‘Tis the Season Christmas fabric by Northcott and we all know it’s never too early to start on Christmas projects!

There are 18 different prints in this collection by Deborah Edwards, including 2 stripes and 3 panels. The panels include Holiday stockings, a Holiday apron and the one I’m going to feature this week – a panel with squares that can be cut apart. There are also 4 solids from the ColorWorks collection. This fabric is available in quilt shops now, so you can get right to work on your Holiday Season sewing and quilting.

In my QUILTsocial blog posts for July, I showed you several different ways to use the large 24″ x 40″ panels from the Canyon Cliff and Mountain Peaks collections by Northcott that use Artisan Spirit Sandscapes.

This week you’ll learn how to use a panel with smaller designs to create some special Holiday items for yourself or for gifts.

Let’s start with this 32½” square wall quilt or table topper. I used my EQ7 program to help plan the design. Here’s how the quilt looks.

Here are the cutting instructions so you can get started right away.

From the ‘Tis the Season panel with small squares, fussy-cut 4 squares including the green border and ¼” seam allowance all around. Fussy-cut another set of 4 squares in the same way. You can choose which blocks you would like to include. They don’t need to be the same as those in the first set of squares. This will probably not be a true square, but that’s just the nature of these printed panels. I’ll show you how to fix that little problem!

Fussy cut 1 square with the green border plus ¼” seam allowance all around. I chose the block with the wreath. Again, it probably won’t be square, but that’s OK.

Cut 1 more square in the same way.

Now you’ll have 2 large squares and 2 small ones.

For the borders, cut 3 – 2″ x WOF (width of fabric) strips from Northcott ColorWorks red. Although I’m just using ColorWorks red and black in my projects this week, you’ll see that there are 113 solid colors in this great collection. Be sure to check it out here!

Measure through the center of each square and cut strips that length for the top and bottom of each square, as in the photo below.

Sew on the strips. Press seams toward red strips.

Measure through the center again to get the measurements for the side borders.

Cut strips that size and sew them to the sides of each square. Press seams toward red strips.
