Creating a mini quilt in mySewnet Quilting Software – A Beginner’s Guide by Margaret Sweete February 24, 2025 written by Margaret Sweete February 24, 2025 1 After many years of quilting embroidery and sewing on Top-of-The-Line Machines, I wanted to take a step back and follow a different path a new quilter would take. The younger sewers are more tech-savvy than we were when I started, and part of that is because the whole world is more tech-savvy! I’m looking forward to playing in their world! I’ll use entry-level techniques, software, and machines to achieve this goal. To start, I need to create a quilt and figure out the yardage, cutting, and sewing instructions. I downloaded and installed the Free mySewnet Crafting Software, which includes the new quilting software! I aim to create a small 40” square quilt for my new grandson, yup, another one! I found some nice soft flannel with a tiny dinosaur print, and I’m using it as inspiration. I want to embroider a couple of dinosaurs and a label and use an entry-level embroidery/sewing machine loaned to me to play on. The new PFAFF creative expect 350. Ta-da! The new PFAFF creative expect 350! So much written information and video format are out there already on the specifics in the software I’m using today that I’ll refer you to those sources instead of “recreating a wheel.” To start with, let’s design a small quilt in a simple, free way! I watched Soni Grint’s YouTube video on the new FREE mySewnet Quilting software. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L_yxBmX2TOY This shows off the software and its ease of use, from changing a block, rotating it, recoloring it, and then saving it and downloading the cutting instructions. This software is a free crafting software download at this link: https://www.mysewnet.com/en-ca/crafting/mysewnet-crafting-software. I have the software downloaded on my computer and signed in under mySewnet Account, which I have. The first step is to open the mySewnet Cloud app, (on my computer or tablet) only to see that everything has changed. When creating, I use my computer for ease of use with my mouse, but it depends on where I am. mySewnet App Opening Screen The mySewnet app has been evolving and will continue with multiple updates as more and more are added. You can see the mySewnet Crafting software link, which we’ll use tomorrow, beside the Quilting software link, which we need to open and play today. If you go to the mySewnet studio, you can download detailed step-by-step instructions on how to operate this software. Several articles are here, but you may need to scroll down the page to find them. https://www.mysewnet.com/en-ca/studio/projects/ mySewnet Projects When I watched Soni’s video, the quilt she did stimulated my imagination. I started with the “Design your Quilt” directions, opened the software, and selected “Load a Sample Quilt Project,” choosing “Example Quilt.” I played with inserting different blocks and rotating them, then got serious with color, saving each version as I went along. I even brought in a sample runner and played with it. My result was the same as the original layout but in different colors. I left the white 8” block areas open for a dinosaur embroidery I chose to make. And the center for Dean’s name and birth date. Creating a quilt seemed easy enough, but what about the fabric I’ll need? What do I cut? How do I piece this together? All questions a new quilter would ask, and yes, it can seem daunting. The far-right top icon allows me to select my seam allowance and Quilt Overview. mySewnet Quilting Software, Finished Mini-Quilt Quilt Project Overview Page in mySewnet Quilting Software Here are all the printable instructions, from yardage to how and what to cut from each color, how to put each block together, and how to put the entire quilt together. When you choose to print, you can choose whatever you need to do at that time. Now that I have created my mini quilt in the mySewnet Quilting Software, join me tomorrow when I cut it on my SINGER MOMENTO 24” Cutting Machine. Easy to create and now easy to cut out…. mySewnet Quilting Software Quilt Map page mySewnet Quilting Software Quilt Yardage page Maybe you only need yardage to start; if you go directly to the yardage heading, you can skip everything else and figure out what you need to buy or find in your stash, as I did, so that is what I chose to print. Don’t forget to buy fabric for the backing and binding and, of course, quilt bat. Then, you don’t have to go out again, just sayin’. Tomorrow, we will take the yardage chart we just explored from mySewnet Crafting Software and create cutting files for the SINGER MOMENTO 24 to cut all the squares and triangles in the correct size and number needed for this mini-quilt project. This passion subsequently led her to learning more about the expanding sewing industry including new software and hardware technologies. Whenever Margaret travels, she seeks out classes, stores, textile museums and other inspirations to enrich her knowledge of fabric and sewing techniques for hand and machine use. This solid sewing comprehension was a natural fit for Margaret to become an Educator to share her extensive knowledge with others who have similar creative desires. She is passionate about sitting down with new hardware and software technologies and learning about their capabilities. Margaret is known for sharing her knowledge of this expanding sewing industry through exquisite and inspirational samples that show various techniques, sewing products and machines. Her classes will excite novice and veteran sewers and give them a solid basis to produce their own unique designs. She is able to take difficult concepts and help individuals be better able to utilize their own machines to their fullest potential. Some of Margaret’s original projects have been featured in “A Needle Pulling Thread” magazine. previous post mySewnet Embroidery Software, more options for machine embroidery designs Leave a Comment Cancel Reply Save my name, email, and website in this browser for the next time I comment.
