Creative quilting with SCHMETZ Twin Needles and Clover Bias Tape by Paul Leger October 24, 2025 written by Paul Leger October 24, 2025 1 From stained glass to crossword puzzles, SCHMETZ twin needles are all that is needed. I had a fun day yesterday talking about essential SCHMETZ Twin Needles every sewist should have in their collection. I promised at the end of yesterday’s post to show you other quilts I created using twin needles. Here we go. The first piece I’m showcasing is called “Hope Springs Eternal” Wall Quilt. This is a wall quilt I made in 2022 for the magazine A Needle Pulling Thread, Issue 59. The theme of the magazine was Garden. I used the CLOVER 700/1128 – Quick Bias Tape – 6mm x 10 m (1⁄4″ x 11 yds) – Black and secured it in place with the SCHMETZ #1794 Twin Needle Carded – 80/12 – 4.0mm. Hope Springs Eternal Wall Quilt I like using an open-toe embroidery foot. This foot helps me follow along the edge of the Clover quick bias tape. Gütermann Cotton 50wt Thread – Black worked smoothly with this twin needle. SCHMETZ Twin 8,0/100 needle sewing down Clover quick bias tape. The SCHMETZ twin needle is strong enough to sew through 8 layers of fabric. Sewing with SCHMETZ twin needle over multiple layers This quilt was completed in 2012. It’s named Nos Aïeuls (our Ancestors). I cannot remember how many yards of red bias tape I had to make to create this quilt. Making my own bias tape gave some minor issues; it was a bit wider than the ¼” I wanted. To make sure my home-made bias was well attached to the quilt top, I did a small zigzag stitch, yes, while using the SCHMETZ twin needle. I also used Gütermann Cotton 50wt Thread 800m – Red. It was a perfect match, and with 800 metres, I had enough. This quilt measures 8¼’ x 16½’! Nos Aïeuls (Our Ancestors) Quilt A close-up of the bias being attached. Attaching bias tape. This is the first quilt I made in 2003 using twin needles. Stain Glass Garden Quilt SCHMETZ #1794 Twin Needle Carded – 80/12 – 4.0mm does add interest to a quilt. Give SCHMETZ twin needles a try, they’re fun. Gütermann Cotton 50wt Thread – Black was the thread I used with the twin needle. After moving to Ottawa in 1996, I joined my first guild. I took more courses and began to buy quilting books and lots of fabrics. Quilting has become my passion. I have made over 150 more quilts since then, and have never looked back. I now share my knowledge of quilting by teaching and doing presentations, and blogging! previous post Essential SCHMETZ needles for specialty sewing and smooth stitching YOU MAY ALSO LIKE...
