Introducing the Husqvarna VIKING Designer Epic 3 | Nordic Frost Edition

by Elaine Theriault

I have something new, yet familiar, to introduce to you this week. We’re all familiar with the Husqvarna VIKING Designer Epic 3; you can refer to my blog post, Unboxing the NEW Husqvarna VIKING DESIGNER EPIC 3, when I unboxed it. That was a very exciting day! I’m still excited every time I get to work on this excellent sewing and embroidery machine!

This week, I’m looking at the Nordic Frost Edition of Designer Epic 3. Same amazing features, with a fresh look!

The color is gorgeous, and you’ll find new detailing on the embroidery arm, as well as on the front of the sewing/embroidery machine. This is a Designer Epic 3, with all the great features of the original.

To recap, here are a few of my favorite features of the Designer Epic 3:

  • JoyOS Advisor is filled with videos and tutorials to get you started and continue learning new techniques.
  • Creativate Connectivity, which includes the online Design Catalogue, the apps, the wireless transfer of designs, the embroidery software, and so much more.
  • Improved Embroidery Unit with the ergonomic hoop connection, which makes attaching and removing hoops easy and quick
  • A projection system that can be used in sewing and embroidery modes.
  • Artificial intelligence, which names the presser foot you have installed and whether it’s installed correctly.
  • Integrated Dual Feed Technology, which is commonly known as a ‘built-in walking foot.’

That list could go on for pages if I were to include all the fabulous features in both sewing and embroidery modes.

And let’s not forget that optional accessories will take your Husqvarna VIKING Designer Epic 3 over the top!

  • Industry’s Largest embroidery area: 450×450 mm with the Mega Turnable Hoop,
  • Free-Arm Embroidery means that if you have a bag, a sleeve, a pant leg, a onesie, or anything you had to take apart to embroider in the past, you don’t have to do that!
  • The Designer Embellishment Attachment allows you to embroider with beads, ribbons, and yarn. WAIT! I just noticed that extra spools are available for purchase for this attachment. I must go shopping!

This week, I plan to highlight features I haven’t covered before, or things I often get questions about.

One thing I don’t think I’ve ever shown you is how easy it is to attach the embroidery unit. We’ve talked about the embroidery unit before in Unveiling the NEW embroidery unit for the Husqvarna VIKING DESIGNER EPIC 3  and how exciting the changes were with the release of the original Designer Epic 3. This unit is heavy and well-designed, with an ergonomic connection system that differs significantly from that of the predecessor, the Designer Epic 2.

Here’s a video showing you just how easy it is to attach the embroidery unit and explaining a couple of points that may be obvious, but you probably haven’t thought of.

Isn’t that amazingly easy? I’m a curious person, and I want to know the details and see why and how everything works. That video will give you everything you need to know about attaching the embroidery unit and why!

Do you remember the large gap on the embroidery machine bed in the earlier video? There’s an embroidery extension table that gets inserted to fill that gap. It’s very tight-fitting, and I’ve been asked repeatedly how to put it on and take it off.

Check out this video where I show you how to place the extension table onto the Designer Epic 3 to fill the gap between the embroidery unit and the embroidery machine. It’s easy, once you know a trick or two!

And now you want to know how to safely remove the embroidery extension table! I prepared a video for that because it’s a bit hard to explain in words. Check this out.

Let’s say that you want to use the larger hoops, such as the included Designer Regal Hoop (465×260 mm) or the optional Mega Turnable Hoop (450×450 mm). The machine embroidery bed is flexible – if you’re using small hoops, the embroidery unit and embroidery extension table are sufficient to support the smaller hoops. But if you want to use the larger hoops, you need more support. To provide extra support, a set of hoop supports is included to accommodate larger hoops as needed. Check out the video to see how they are attached and unattached.

One other thing I want to share today is how I position the Designer Epic 3 on my sewing table. I pretty much keep the Designer Epic 3 set up for machine embroidery, and that embroidery arm is long! I do NOT want to bang into that by accident, so I position the machine at an angle. And don’t forget your chair, which can also cause problems with the embroidery arm. Check out the video to see what I mean.

One part of the Designer Epic 3 got a facelift: the luggage section, where you store the embroidery unit and the hoops.

The case is slightly smaller but thicker than the earlier version.

There’s a zipper on each side to allow easy access. One side holds the embroidery unit and the embroidery extension table. The other side is where you store the embroidery hoops. Slots for the four included hoops make storage or travel easy. The support wings also fit on this side, as does the adapter.

The four hoop sizes are the DESIGNER Regal Hoop (465×260 mm), the DESIGNER Royal Hoop II (360×200 mm), the DESIGNER Jewel Hoop II (250×150 mm), and the DESIGNER Splendid Square Hoop II (120x120mm). These four options offer a wide range of hoop sizes. All four hoops have the new Designer Epic 3 ergonomic connector system, which I love.

And if you have hoops with the older connector system, there’s a hoop adapter that allows you to use most, but not all, of the legacy hoops.

Now, suppose you also have the new Mega Turnable hoop, which is 450×450 mm, which is HUGE. It comes in its own box, but wouldn’t it be nice if it could fit in the Designer Epic 3 luggage with the rest of your hoops?

The Mega Turnable Hoop

Guess what? Once you put the insert on top of the included hoops section, there’s a slot for the Mega Turnable Hoop. I LOVE IT!!!!

A spot to store the Mega Turnable Hoop

Doesn’t it look like there’s a spot for another hoop inside the Mega Turnable Hoop? Well, yes, there is, and that’s what we’re looking at tomorrow! I’m super excited to share that with you, so be sure to come back.

And there you have it! The Nordic Frost Edition of the Husqvarna VIKING Designer Epic 3. The same great machine, the same great features, but with a new dress! It’s gorgeous!

Be sure to follow along the rest of the week, as I’ll be sharing that new hoop and a couple of projects that will use other features on the Designer Epic 3 that I get questions about – think projection and other alignment tools.

Have a great day!

Ciao!
