Creating reversible charger plate placemats | PFAFF creative expression 750 by Margaret Sweete November 7, 2025 written by Margaret Sweete November 7, 2025 1 Yesterday, using the embroidery of the PFAFF creative expression 750 Sewing and Embroidery Machine, I made the reversible table runner with appliqued orange pumpkins and green vines on one side and appliqued green holly leaves and red berries on the other. Designing charger plate placemats in CREATIVATE Software Today, I’m working on my charger plate-style placemats. To keep with my holiday theme, I want them to be reversible, with orange pumpkins on one side and green holly leaves with red berries on the other. In the CREATIVATE software, I opened the main screen and, under View, I chose the PFAFF Creative Grand Dream Hoop (360×350), which is an optional hoop. However, it will allow me to create and embroider the charger-style placemats in one hooping. I found a holly and berry design in SuperDesigns (Wreath1, #1) and brought it in, sizing it to 1-1½” high proportionally. I kept it on the narrow side so that my 10” plate would fit, and the holly and berries would fit around it. Embroidering the holly & berry design with the creative expression 750 Another awesome feature of the PFAFF creative expression 750 Sewing and Embroidery machine is that it can use the PFAFF creative Grand Dream Hoop (360X350), a turnable hoop, which means you hoop once, stitch one side, then take the hoop out of the machine, rotate it and reinstall it on the machine and stitch out the second half. This will make the entire charger plate-style placemat embroidery in one hooping! The totally new style Semi Automatic Needle Threader will make changing threads during embroidery a breeze! I used the pumpkin SuperDesign (Food1 #7) and kept the pumpkin between 1” – 1½” in proportional height, repeating it in a circle (16 repeats) close to the outer edge of the ‘stitchable’ area of the hoop. The pumpkins and leaves are fused appliques. I plan to make the placemats reversible, one side Thanksgiving (pumpkins) and the other Christmas (holly and berries), with fusible batting in the center. CREATIVATE software with a pumpkin SuperDesign (Food 1, #7), repeated in a circle with 16 times. The pumpkins and leaves are appliqued, so I was able to export the SVG and cut the fusible applique on the SINGER MOMENTO 24” Digital Cutting Machine. I used HeatnBond Lite and bonded it to the back of the fabric before cutting out the appliques. I worked my way through the embroidery until it was ready for applique, removed the hoop, tool it to the ironing board, positioned each fusible appliqued leaf and pumpkin in place, and then returned to finish the embroidery. Each leaf was ¾” high by 1½” wide and accurately cut! It’s easier than cutting them out with scissors!! But slowly, as it did, each leaf separately and then each pumpkin, first one side, then the other. I used two layers of fusible batting, each side fused to a front, and cut (4) 14¾” in diameter circles of fabric. These were easily cut consistently with the SINGER MOMENTO 24” Digital Cutting Machine! Next, I centered each batting circle to the back of each embroidery and fused. I used 505 Temporary Quilt Baste Adhesive Spray and spray-basted the two batt-fused circles together. Once the whole sandwich was completed, the chargers consisted of two inner layers of batting and two outer embroidered layers, one featuring a pumpkin, the other a holly/berry circle. I stitched them together in a circle at the outer edge, using a narrow 3-step zigzag stitch, and then a small straight stitch just at the outer edge of the previous stitch, trimming away any excess batting. I used a 9mm basting stitch, positioned as far to the right as possible, just outside the running stitch. This basting stitch followed the left edge of the presser foot around the straight stitch, serving as a trim line. This way, we can achieve an even, narrow fringe. The completed charger plate-style placemats are made in cream fabric with a frayed edge. A perfect finish to a creative week And so, this ends my play time, preparing for the holiday season ahead. It was so quick to cut the pieces on the SINGER MOMENTO 24” Digital Cutter and sew with the IDT system and embroider on the PFAFF creative expression 750. However, I have a feeling that I’ll still be making a few more by the end of the month, as I have already given a few away, resulting in a big hit! I’m wishing you a very happy holiday season ahead.
