Fusing applique shapes with HeatnBond Featherlite: Light AND strong! by Jean Boyd July 7, 2022 written by Jean Boyd July 7, 2022 295 Hello! Yesterday I showed you how to prepare the applique pieces for Fish #2 and Fish #3 for the ‘Something Fish wall quilt’, using Odif 606 Iron on Adhesive for fabric and Odif 404 Repositionable Craft Adhesive. Today, we’ll use a HeatnBond Featherlite 1yd piece of fusible web. This is the same product we used for Fish #1, but it comes in a piece 17″ wide by 36″ long. If you have a lot of applique pieces to trace, itʼs sometimes more economical to use this larger size sheet. HeatnBond Feather Lite is a lightweight iron-on adhesive that has a strong bond without adding extra weight or stiffness to a project. The solid sheet adhesive and paper-backing allow you to draw or trace your designs and then easily cut them out. Once applied, you can easily sew through the HeatnBond Feather Lite, making it ideal for multi-layer appliques, quilting, home decor, wearables and much more. Fish #4 Trace the applique shapes for Fish #4, from the PDF file, on HeatnBond Featherlite fusible web. These shapes are reversed for use with the HeatnBond Featherlite. Shapes for Fish #4 traced on HeatnBond Featherlite fusible web Place the shapes, shiny (fusible) side down, on the wrong side of the desired fabrics. Shapes ready to cut out Press the paper shapes to the wrong side of the fabric, using medium heat and no steam, for about 2 seconds. The full directions for using the HeatnBond Featherlite fusible web are on the back of the package. Cut out each shape following the printed lines. Remove the paper liner from the back of each shape. To help remove the paper liner, use a straight pin to score the paper. Use a pin to help remove the paper liner. Using the diagram of the finished block as a guide, place the shapes on an applique pressing sheet or piece of parchment paper. Press gently, just to secure each shape. Fish #4 assembled on a piece of parchment paper Lift the whole fish shape from the pressing sheet or parchment paper, and place it on the 17½” x 7″ background fabric. Press and hold the iron for 6 seconds on each section, until the entire piece is bonded to the background fabric. Fish #4 pressed on the background fabric Now you know how wonderful HeatnBond Featherlite iron-on adhesive is for applique. Please join me again tomorrow on QUILTsocial to learn different ways to finish the edges of the applique, sew the blocks together and add borders to create you own special ‘Something Fishy’ wall quilt!
