by Jean Boyd

Here’s how to add Log Cabin-style borders around the machine embroidered blocks and use up some scraps from your stash at the same time. If you missed yesterday’s post, you can get the complete material list for the Working Girls Quilt by following the link.

Cutting the strips

From the fat quarters or scraps, cut 2″ strips on the lengthwise grain. You’ll need the following:

  • 14 – 2″ x 14″
  • 14 – 2″ x 12″
  • 14 – 2″ x 11″
  • 14 – 2″ x 9″

Sewing the strips

Sew a 2″ x 9″ strip to the top of a bordered, embroidered block using a partial seam. Make sure to use the ¼” foot to keep all your seams accurate!

  • Sew a 2″ x 11″ strip to the right-hand side.
  • Sew a 2″ x 9″ strip to the bottom.
  • Sew a 2″ x 11″ strip to the left-hand side.
  • Finish the partial seam from the first strip.
  • Press all seams toward strips.

Sew on another round of strips, this time using the 2″ x 12″ and 2″ x 14″ strips.

Try to have a good variety of fabrics in each block. The finished block will measure 13½” x 15½”.

Sew strips on the remaining embroidered blocks in the same way.

Strip Sets

From remaining fat quarters fabric or scraps, cut 20 – 2″ x 13½” strips.

Make 4 strip sets with 5 – 2″ x 13½” strips in each.
