No-sew embellishments – Easy with ribbons, buttons, and a little glue

Yesterday I used 2 great products to make 3D flowers – HeatnBond EZ Print Feather Lite and Odif Fabric Booster. I allowed my flowers, leaves, and bows to air dry overnight and today I’ll fuse them all to the quilted background that I made on Wednesday.

Usually, I hand sew embellishments to my quilts, but today I’m taking the easy way out and using Fabric Fuse by HeatnBond Quick Bond Fabric Adhesive to adhere everything to the background.

Before I fuse anything to the front of the quilted background, I’ll fuse some pieces of ESPRIT Sew-On Hook and Loop Tape onto the back of the little quilt so that it can stick to the black background that I made in my QUILTsocial post Sewing a hanging sleeve to your quilt, the easy way.

I’ll cover the back of each section of hook tape (my black background has the loop side) with dots of the Fabric Fuse by HeatnBond Quick Bond Fabric Adhesive. Then I’ll press it into place and apply pressure for a few seconds. It needs to dry for 4-6 hours before it’s secure enough to use.

Now I’ll use a larger amount of the adhesive to secure buttons from my Crafting Essentials Bottle of Buttons in pink tones into the center of each flower. I need to add more of the glue because the inside of the flowers isn’t flat, so the glue wasn’t making contact with both the fabric and the button. Once again, I’ll press and hold for a few seconds.

Use the Fabric Fuse to adhere a button to the middle of each flower.

I’ll start to fuse my pieces to the background. The stems cut from the Unique Creativ Trim Pack – Red & Green will go down first since they’re behind the flowers and leaves. A line of dots down the center will be enough to fuse them.

Next, I’ll glue down the flowers at the top of each stem. A large dot of the Fabric Fuse by HeatnBond Quick Bond Fabric Adhesive on the back of the middle of the flower should hold each of them down. Since I want the leaves to be 3D as well, I’ll only add a large dot of glue in a couple of places on each leaf. Once again, I’ll place them where I want them, then I’ll press down where the glue dots are to secure them.

Place two dots of adhesive on the back of each leaf.

I’ll also use a small dot of the adhesive on the back of each ribbon bow and adhere it to each flower stem.

I love embellishing with buttons and since I have a whole jar full of Crafting Essentials Buttons and don’t even need to sew them on, I’ll add a few to the quilted background.

And again, we wait. The Fabric Fuse by HeatnBond Quick Bond Fabric Adhesive needs about 4-6 to dry before it can be used. The flowers and other embellishments seem like they fused to the fabric almost immediately, but I want to make sure that the adhesive on the ESPRIT Sew-On Hook and Loop Tape is good and dry before I attach it to the black banner.

And now, here it is – the completed 3D spring flower banner. I never made anything like this before and I really love it!

This was such a fun project and now that I’ve used Fabric Fuse by HeatnBond Quick Bond Fabric Adhesive to embellish without sewing, I can see that it can be used for all types of projects.

All the products I used this week, from the Crafting Essentials Bottle of Buttons I used to embellish this wall hanging to the Mont Marte Signature Fabric Paints and Odif OdiShine Glitter Gel I used to stencil my tea towels, were of such great quality and so fun to use. I’ll be keeping them handy for my future crafting and sewing projects.
