The many uses of Odif adhesive sprays

Happy Wednesday! This easy-to-make Christmas wall quilt is coming along nicely, and the techniques I’m demonstrating this week are both easy and fun.

Odif has several products to make the applique process easy and pleasurable to do. Yesterday I showed you how to use Odif 808 Spray and Fix Temporary Adhesive for Paper Patterns and Odif 606 Spray and Fix No-sew Fusible Adhesive Web to apply the bow to the quilt.

Today I’ll demonstrate why and how to use Odif 404 Spray and Fix Permanent Repositionable Adhesive for Craft Material to audition pieces used in applique.

There are many Christmas-themed elements you can use to embellish this quilt top, such as a nutcracker, doll, bear, or maybe even a spinning top. I decided to add a teddy bear to the quilt top.

As I did with the fabric bow yesterday, today I once again used Odif 606 and 808 adhesive sprays to secure the bear pattern to the fabrics.

I sprayed the paper template pieces with Odif 808 Spray and Fix Temporary Adhesive for Paper Patterns then pressed them onto the fabric.

Before removing the paper from the back of the bear fabrics, I placed the fabric on a window and traced all the lines onto the front side of the fabric. Tracing those lines now will help in the placement of the bear’s ears and when doing the satin stitching over the lines.

I wanted to place the bear on the right-hand side of the quilt. To help me decide exactly where to place it, I auditioned different placements of the bear.

When I put fabrics on my design wall, they tend to fall to the floor. To stop this from happening, I use Odif 404 Spray and Fix Permanent Repositionable Adhesive for Craft Material. When Odif 404 is sprayed on the wrong side of fabric or paper, the piece becomes tacky like a Post It note. This will allow me to position and reposition the bear cut-out while it’s on the design wall, and I can back away to look at the placement without having to worry that the bear will fall to the floor.

In this next step, I have two options. The first is to use Odif 606 spray, as I did yesterday, to apply the bear’s nose, ears and eyes to the bear template and then to the quilt. The second option is to use Odif 808 spray on the back of the fabric.

Why use one over the other? It comes down to personal choice. Both (with the help of an iron) will secure the bear to the quilt. The benefit of Odif 808 Spray and Fix Temporary Adhesive for Paper Patterns is that it gives the user the opportunity to easily change the placement of the pieces. This time, I used Odif 606 to secure the bear’s body, nose and soles. I used Odif 808 for the eyes, as I wasn’t sure which direction I wanted the bear to look to.

With every piece in place, I secured the raw edges with a decorative stitch to complete the quilt top.

Odif sprays have many uses. Some, like Odif 404 Spray and Fix Permanent Repositionable Adhesive for Craft Material, Odif 808 Spray and Fix Temporary Adhesive for Paper Patterns and Odif 606 Spray and Fix No-sew Fusible Adhesive Web, can be used safely on both paper and fabric. For me, this is a huge benefit when deciding on the placement of applique pieces, as they give me the opportunity to change my mind.
