3 little mug mats from leftover Letterpress fabric

Yesterday I showed you how to use fabrics from the Northcott Letterpress Collection to make the Pull-out Plate Placemat for carrying plates and cutlery to your next potluck event. I still had lots of leftover scraps from my 4 different placemats but I hadn’t had a chance to use the typewriter fabric (#21889-11) which is one of my favorites in this collection. So I decided to make some mug mats! Here we go.

Mug Mat 1 – Super Simple!

Cutting Instructions

Cut a 6″ square from the typewriter fabric

Sewing Instructions

  • Sew the black 6″ strips and then the 7″ strips to the typewriter square.
  • Sew on the typewriter keys 2¾” strips.
  • Layer top, batting and backing and do some simple straight line quilting.
  • Fold 3″ binding strip in half and press. Using a walking or even-feed foot, sew on the binding using a ½” seam. Fold binding to back and hand-stitch in place.

Mug Mat 2

Cutting Instructions

  • Cut another piece of typewriter fabric about 6″ square. It doesn’t have to be exact and it could be a rectangle if you prefer.
  • I used strips left over from the placemats, but if you don’t have any leftovers, just cut a few strips 2″ – 3″ wide from 3 or 4 different fabrics.
  • Start by sewing 1 strip on an angle, right sides together, on the typewriter square. Press strip away from the square. Cut off excess fabric from the typewriter square.

Sew 1 strip on an angle.

Sew on another strip in the same way.

Sew on a second strip.

Continue sewing strips all around the typewriter fabric. You’re making a Crazy Quilt block here!

When you’ve gone all around the center square, square up the block. Mine was about 7″ or 8″ square, but you can make them any size you like.

Layer mug mat, batting and backing and quilt as desired.

Trim up the edges, sew on a binding and you’re done!

Mug Mat 3

I had a little bit of the pieced strip left over from the Pull-out Plate Placemat that I showed you yesterday, so that became a mug mat too! I just sewed a couple of strips to each side of the pieced strip.

Use up leftover strip piecing for another mug mat.

I hope you’ve enjoyed seeing all the ways to use the Northcott Letterpress fabric this week. Be sure to click on the “Product Finder” button on the Northcott web site to find out where to buy this fabric in your area!
