Yesterday I showed you how to use 2 fat quarters from the Banyan Batiks Visual Sound collection to make a modern-style table runner.
Table runner from just 2 fat quarters
Today, I’ll show you how I used the following fabrics to make a modern-style lap quilt using a total of 9 fat quarters:
fabrics
- 6 fat quarters from the Banyan Batiks Feathers collection in the Mandarin Teal colorway
- 1 fat quarter from each of these Ketanfabrics – 81000-522 (Sunburst) and 81000-442 (Steel Glaze)
- 1 fat quarter from the Brush Strokes collection – 81230-59
- ⅝ yd of Ketan – 8100-649 (Indigo) for the inner border and binding

Ketan has dozens of colors in the collection and, along with Brush Strokes and Shibori, is a perfect blender for all the Banyan Batiks fabrics.
Believe it or not, this quilt started out with 2 simple nine patch blocks!
Use 9 fat quarters of Banyan Batiks to make this quilt.
Here’s how you can make your own version of this quilt.
From each of 9 Banyan Batiks fat quarters, cut 2 – 10″ squares. There will be a strip left from each fat quarter that is approximately 8″ x 22″. These strips will be used for the border, but they don’t have to be cut to an exact size yet.

Sew the 10″ squares together to make 2 – nine patch blocks. Have 9 different fabrics in each block.
Arrange the fabrics the same in each block.

Cut each block into 4 equal sections.
Cut each block into 4 equal sections.
Now you can “play” with the 4 sections to create a new block. There are many ways to arrange the pieces, but this is the one I chose.
Sew the sections together and you’ll have 2 new blocks.
Sew the sections together.
Come back tomorrow and I’ll show you to change your 2 blocks made from 9 Banyan Batiks fat quarters into this modern quilt!

This is part 3 of 5 in this series.
Go back to part 2: 2 fat quarters for a modern table runner is all you need
Go to part 4: I bet you can’t tell this modern quilt started with 9-patch block
