Add pop to a modern patchwork cushion top!

This is going to be a super fun week, we’re going to make not one but two modern quilted cushions!

The first cushion is going to be a Modern Patchwork cushion and the second one is a modern embellished cushion. Both are going to brighten up any room!

Let’s get started with the Modern Patchwork Cushion.

Making 2 modern cushions using different techniques: modern patchwork and modern embellishing

materials

12” pillow form

½ yd white fabric

⅛ yd of each of pink, blue, lime green and blue

ribbon – to be used in the seams of the patchwork

backing – one fat quarter (18” x 22”)

batting 13” x 13”

TrueCut System

Ribbon for modern patchwork cushion

For the modern patchwork cushion, I chose solid bright colors on a white background.

Prior to starting, press all your fabric and gather sewing supplies such as Gütermann thread which is my go to thread when quilting, and 80-12 Schmetz needles when piecing.

Pressing all fabric with Oliso Pro Iron.

Back of Cushion

The instructions can be used for creating a back of any pillow, but in this case we are using a 12″ pillow form.

For the back of cushion, measure fabric by adding 1” onto width of pillow form (12″ +1″) and 6” onto height of pillow form (12″ + 6″) and cut one piece 13” x 18” then cut in half to get two 13” x 9” rectangles.

Along one of the 13”  sides of each of the 9” rectangles, fold over ¼”, press, fold over ¼” and stitch. Set aside.

Remember to measure twice and cut once.

Top of cushion

Cut from the following fabrics:

white

A – two 2” x 12½”

B – four 1½” x 2½”

C – 2½” x 12½”

F – 2½” x 12½”

H – 1” x 2½”

I – three 2” x 2½”

K – four 1½” x 2”

green

D – 2½” x 3”

E – 2” x 2”

H – 1” x 2½”

I – 2” x 2½”

pink

E – 2” x 2”

I – 2” x 2½”

J – 2½” x 3½”

blue

E – 2” x 2”

I – 2” x 2½”

J – 2½” x 3½”
