Today we’re going to finish the Modern Patchwork cushion! Sewing the top and quilting it to give it fun texture will really make it look lovely.
According to the diagram below, lay your pieces of cut fabric out on a large board that you can move to the sewing machine. I used a 12½ʺ ruler and laid them on that. Even a cereal box cut apart would work.
Taking your fun colored ribbon, cut strips of ribbon and lay them where you want them to go randomly throughout the cushion. Cut them a bit longer, and you can trim after sewing.
Sew the strips of colored fabric together first. When sewing in the ribbons, insert them in between the ‘right sides together’ of the 2 fabrics. Then sew the A, C, A and F strips to join.
Layer top, right side up, batting next, and if you want a finished look another 13” square of fabric on the back, pin and quilt.
When your top is finished trim to a 12” square. Lay right side up.
Take your two back pieces and laying right sides down on the quilt top so right sides are together, wrong sides out. Match outer edges so the sewn edges of the back overlap.
Pin in place and sew completely around the outer edges using a ½ʺ seam allowance.
Gently flip right side out and press if necessary. Insert pillow and admire your modern quilted patchwork pillow!
Try making them in different colored schemes or substitute giant rick rack instead of ribbon. The modern patchwork pillows are fast and easy to make and so much fun to use or give away!
