At the beginning of the week we created a Modern Patchwork Cushion. Now we get to have some fun creating our Flower Power Pillow! This modern quilted cushion allows you to use your creativity in making the different flowers that go on this quilted cushion. Let’s get started.
materials
rick rack 4 colors, 36” each
2 buttons
DMC embroidery floss – 4 skeins, 2 of each color
3 fat quarters, white fabric
13” square batting
2 zippers, colored
The first flower for our Flower Power pillow is the rick rack flower. While this will seem fiddly, stick with it, any little indiscrepencies won’t show up when the flower is done!
Rick Rack Flower
Take 2 different colors of rick rack, I used the medium size but the bigger the better. Cut both at 36” in length. Under your sewing machine, you are going to braid as you go, following the grooves of the rick rack, doing an over under motion. Don’t worry if it looks funny or is hard, just fold about an inch at a time and stitch close to the edge of one side.
Once done, begin folding into a tight little ball, using a glue gun or taking tiny stitches, to secure as you go.
When completely rolled up, tuck end underneath and glue the rick rack flower to a circle of felt the same diameter as the flower.
These flowers are quite addicting! For this pillow we’re making two, but make as many as you want in as many color combinations that you can dream up!
Next up we are going to have some floss fun as we make tassels!
