Creating a bold batik street for the quilted night skyline

The night skyline is almost complete! In yesterday’s post a high-rise building and a building with solar panels were sewn together.

We’ve been using one of Banyan Batiks’ latest lines, Broken Glass, to make the wallhanging; the batiks are helping to create a dynamic look to the skyline. Today we’ll add one more house and create a bold street to go in front of the buildings on the quilted wallhanging.

Make Triangle Roof house Unit

To make the roof draw a diagonal line on the back of each black 2½″ square.
Refer to the photo for orientation: put one black square on top of the gray 2½″ x 4½″  rectangle, right sides together with the diagonal line opposite the corner.

Orientation of black square on gray rectangle.

Sew on the line then trim the excess triangle past the seam allowance to the right of the line. Press the seam away from the gray.

Repeat on the opposite corner with the second black 2½″ square, again with the diagonal line opposite the corner.

Sew the bottom edge of the roof unit to the top long edge of the dark blue 1½″ x 4½″ rectangle. Press the seam to the dark blue rectangle.

Orientation of second black square.

Layout of triangle roof house pieces

To make the bottom of the house, sew the long right edge of the dark blue 1½″ x 2½″ rectangle to the left long edge of the same size gray rectangle – it’s the door. Press the seam to the dark blue.

Sew the bright blue 1½″ square to the dark blue 1½″ square and press the seam to the dark blue.

Sew this unit with the bright blue on top to the right side of the gray door. Press the seam away from the door.

Finally sew the remaining dark blue 1½″ x 2½″ rectangle to the right side of the house unit. Press the seam to the dark blue rectangle.

Make Moon and Sky unit

Draw diagonal line on back of light pink 5″ rectangle.

With right sides together, sew black and light pink 5″ squares together by sewing ¼″ away from each side of the drawn line.

Cut on the line and press the seams to the black batik. Trim each unit to 4½″ square.

Use one as the moon/sky unit and keep the other one; it could be fun to include it on the back as a great spot to write your label!

Assemble the moon/sky/house unit

Sew the bottom short edge of the black 4½″ x 6½″ rectangle to the top edge of the triangle roof house unit. Press the seam to the black rectangle.
Sew the moon unit with the pink half in the top right to the bottom of this unit. Press the seam down to the black rectangle.

Layout of moon, sky and triangle roof house units.

Join this moon/sky/house unit to the rest of the skyline by sewing the left long edge to the right edge of the solar panel building unit made in yesterday’s post.

Then join the right edge of the row house unit to the left edge of the high-rise building to join all of the buildings in the wallhanging together.

Then it’s time to build a road!

Row house unit and buildings unit

Make Road unit

Sew together ten pairs of bright pink 1½″ x 2½″ rectangles with black 1½″ squares; have the pink rectangle on the left and the black square on the right. Press the seams to the rectangle. You’ll have one leftover pink rectangle.

Sew the pairs together by sewing the right black square edge to the left pink rectangle edge of another unit until all of the units are sewn into one. Press the seams to the rectangles.

Add the remaining pink rectangle to the right edge.

Remaining pink rectangle to add…

Sew two sets of black 1½″ x 16½″ strips together, end to end. Press seams to one side.

Sew two sets of blue-gray 1½″ x 2½″ strips together, end to end. Press seams to one side.

Sew one long edge of a black unit to the long edge of one blue-gray unit, rotating one to nest the seams. Press the seam to the blue-gray.

Repeat with second pair of black and blue-gray units.

Sew one unit to the top of the pink rectangle/black square strip with the black unit touching the pink rectangle/black square unit.

Press the seam to the top unit.

Sew the remaining black/blue-gray strip unit to the bottom of the pink rectangle/black strip with the black unit touching the pink rectangle/black square unit.

Press the seam to the bottom unit.

This section should measure 5½″ tall x 32 long.

Join Buildings to Road unit

Sew the bottom edge of the building unit to the top edge of the road unit and press the seam to the road unit.

The batik night skyline is complete, at least as a top! The Banyan BatiksBroken Glass fabrics have done their job of making the night come alive in this wallhanging. Tomorrow we quilt!
