Fibre art postcards turn treasured moments into something you can send

After giving our fabric scraps new purpose with Elaine Theriault’s Borderlines! quilt last week, I’m shrinking things down considerably with a project that proves meaningful textile art doesn’t have to be large.

When was the last time you received a postcard in the mail? The Art of Fabric Postcards: Capturing Moments, Sharing Stories by Ana Buzzalino takes that wonderful tradition and gives it a textile twist. Instead of simply writing about a place, person, or memory, Ana shows how fabric, photographs, color, thread, and quilting can capture a moment in a tiny piece of art. Best of all, you can send it to someone special. In a world of texts and emails, there’s something rather wonderful about creating a little piece of yourself that someone can actually hold.

Issue 66 of A Needle Pulling Thread celebrated fabric postcards and the very personal connection they can create. These miniature works of textile art offer a wonderful opportunity to experiment with techniques on a manageable scale while making something meaningful enough to send to someone you love. 

Ana’s project captures that idea beautifully. A photograph or memorable image becomes the starting point, but fabric, color, stitching, and quilting transform it into something far more tactile and personal.

I especially love the idea of choosing an image that means something to you. Perhaps it’s a place you visited, a garden you adore, a family memory, or simply a photograph that makes you happy. Your postcard becomes a tiny textile story.
