For the love of buttons – making a modern button quilt

Yesterday I gave you the cutting instructions for the little button quilt. We’ll be using buttons from the bottle o’ buttons blue collection. Now, let’s start sewing!

Button quilt mounted on a 12″ x 16″ Artist’s Canvas

For each block 1 you’ll need

  • 1 – 1½” square from fabric 1
  • 2 – 1″ x 1½” and 2 – 1″ x 2½” black strips
  • 2 – 1½” x 4½” and 2 – 1½” x 2½” strips from fabric 2

For each block 2 you’ll need

  • 1 – 1½” square from fabric 2
  • 2 – 1¼” x 1½” and 2 – 1¼” x 3″ black strips
  • 2 – 1¼” x 4½” and 2 – 1¼” x 3″ strips from fabric 1

Here are the strips for block 2 all laid out and ready to sew.

Strips for block 2

  • Sew the black strips to the center square. Because the blocks are small and I didn’t want to distort the shape by pressing, I just finger-pressed all the seams as I went along.

Sew black strips to the center square.

  • Now sew the 1¼” fabric 1 strips to the outside edges.

Sew on the 1¼” fabric 1 strips.

  • Press the block carefully, without steam, so you don’t distort the shape.
  • The block should measure 4½” x 4½”.
  •  Make 2 more block 2.

Completed block 2

  • Make 3 block 1 in the same way, using the remaining 1″ and 1½” strips.

Completed block 1

Come back tomorrow and I’ll show how to finish this little quilt and sew on the buttons from the bottle o’ buttons collection by machine!

This is part 2 of 5 in this series.
