In quilting circles, there too, the devil is in the details

We tend to think that just because the quilt top is finished that we’re done! But that’s far from true as they say, ‘the devil is in the details’. You’ve worked hard to choose the right fabric to have the best visual impact, although the NEW Banyan Batiks Color Blocking fabrics really help make that part easy. Then you’ve worked hard to have all your seams align. Now you have to think about quilting the piece so that it stays nice for a very long time. What’s to say it won’t become an heirloom for someone?

That’s why we really have to think about what we put inside our quilt. For this project, I went with FAIRFIELD Nature-Fil Bamboo Blend Batting. This batting is lightweight so that it’s neither too warm nor too heavy. Perfect for what I was looking for, considering I wanted a throw for snuggling up on a sofa or placing it as a bed runner on a duvet.

The batting is a blend of 50% rayon fiber from bamboo and 50% certified organic cotton which makes the batting soft yet strong as it will hold your quilt together and won’t tear apart. The estimated shrinkage is 2-3% and you can quilt up to 8” distance, which is overall very good.

I made this quilt as a special gift and hope that it will become a heirloom for that person, so I also opted to have it quilted by a professional long arm quilter. We picked a design that really made the design come alive. And I believe it would also be an easy design to follow at home. I opted for the Lustre Turquoise from Banyan Batiks to make the backing. I needed two pieces of 2½yd sewn together for the backing. And I took the leftovers to make the binding. It blended perfectly with the quilt top.

My last suggestion is to make your label and sew it onto the back of the quilt, finishing it off with the binding so that it can’t be removed without causing damage to the quilt. After all, you do want people to know that you were the creator of this heirloom quilt.
