Life is a Beach Table Runner with charming beach house style

by Carla A. Canonico

After moving from moonlight to the beautiful stitched sunshine of Dawn of a New Day Art Quilt by Ana Buzzalino last week, let us head to the beach with a charming row of little houses in Life is a Beach Table Runner by Cathy McClean.

But before I get to the pattern, I’ll let you in on the joy I get from photographing ANPTmag projects. My favorite part is setting up the scene, which involves imagining where to photograph the piece, what props I will use, and then watching out for the weather. The weather is very important as it determines the light I’ll have to work with. Summer and fall are the best seasons for photographing projects; the struggles are real during the winter and spring. Back to the pattern…

Some projects instantly feel like a vacation. Life is a Beach Table Runner brings together travel memories, tiny beach houses, and the cozy joy of stitching something cheerful for your table. I love that Cathy McClean turned houses she photographed on beach trips into a quilted table runner, because that is exactly the kind of inspiration we quilters understand. See something you love, take a photo, then figure out how to make it in fabric.

This pattern by Cathy McClean was featured in Issue 53, our Architecture-inspired issue. This theme celebrates the shapes, lines, structures, and details that make buildings so fascinating, then invites us to translate that inspiration into needlework. In the quilting projects, architecture becomes a wonderful playground for clean angles, strong perspective, interesting structures, and fabric storytelling.

Here is the project description from the pattern page. In her travels around the world, Cathy has always loved small houses. This table runner is fashioned from beach houses she photographed during trips to the beach, using foundation paper piecing and turned appliqué techniques.

What makes this project especially exciting is how it turns architecture into something relaxed and sunny. You get the precision of foundation paper piecing, the softness of turned appliqué, and a table runner that feels like a little row of vacation memories stitched together.

Now tell me, if you made this table runner, would your houses be bright seaside colors, soft sandy neutrals, or a whole row of scrappy cottages from your stash?

Join me next week to find out which inspiring ANPTmag quilting project I’ll share with you!
