Another World Wall Quilt: a playful planetary quilt

After exploring retro geometry and wonderfully manageable curves with ’60s Curves Quilt by Monika Henry last week, let us leave Earth for a little while and stitch a playful planetary scene with Another World Wall Quilt by Paul Léger.

Some quilts invite you to look up, dream bigger, and maybe even imagine a whole new universe in fabric! Another World Wall Quilt is one of those projects. Paul Léger uses bold batiks to create saturated planets with wonderful texture and movement, turning a small wall quilt into a bright little galaxy of its own.

This pattern by Paul Léger was featured in Issue 62, our cosmos-inspired issue. This theme celebrates the planets, stars, night sky, and all the creative possibilities that open when needlework looks beyond the everyday. It’s a fun issue full of stellar ideas, from quilts that reimagine the universe to projects inspired by moonlight, stars, galaxies, and planetary color.

Here’s the project description from the pattern page. To get the planetary effect, Paul recommends using batiks. With their saturated colors and interesting designs, batiks make awesome planets. The pattern requirements are for a wall quilt, but Paul also suggests expanding the idea into a twin-size quilt for a child’s room, or even into a double- or queen-size quilt for a truly fantastic bed quilt!
