QUILTsocial Rewind Redo Wall Pouch gives old quilting new purpose

by Carla A. Canonico

fter turning treasured memories into miniature textile stories with Ana Buzzalino’s fabric postcards last week, I’m going bigger again, but not by much! This week’s project proves that something you made years ago can have a whole new life when you look at it with fresh eyes.

Do you have a quilted panel, an orphan block, or even an older project tucked away because you’re not quite sure what to do with it? Nancy Devine’s QUILTsocial Rewind Redo Wall Pouch from ANPTmag Issue 71 may have you looking through your sewing room with renewed enthusiasm.

Nancy went back to a quilted swim bag she created for QUILTsocial in 2014 and reimagined the idea as a practical wall pouch. I love that! Instead of starting completely from scratch, she shows how an earlier idea can evolve into something useful, decorative, and entirely new.

Issue 71 invited designers to revisit projects from their creative past and ask a wonderful question: what could this become now? Earlier ideas were refreshed with new techniques, materials, tools, and years of added experience. Quilting, knitting, embroidery, cross-stitch, crochet, rug hooking, punch needle, and creative sewing all became part of this exploration of growth and reinvention. Rather than leaving an older project behind, the issue celebrated the possibilities of looking at familiar work differently. Sometimes the most inspiring new project is already sitting in our sewing room waiting to be rediscovered.

And there’s something especially satisfying about giving quilted work another purpose. A panel that has been waiting in a drawer or an orphan block you couldn’t bear to discard suddenly has somewhere to go and something useful to do.

What quilted piece do you have tucked away that you could reimagine into something completely different?
