Teach Peace Flower Power Quilt brings a timeless message to quilting

by Carla A. Canonico

Last week, Heather McArthur had us thinking ahead to handmade holiday greetings with Reusable Fabric Art Greeting Card. This week, I’m sharing a quilt with a much bigger message. Clodagh Coker’s Teach Peace Flower Power Quilt is fresh, joyful, and built around a simple idea that never goes out of style: choose peace.

The peace symbol has been recognized for generations, and Clodagh surrounds it with bold flower-power energy in a quilt designed to remind us to carry peace into our hearts, our daily lives, and our relationships. The result is cheerful and graphic, with a message that feels just as meaningful hanging on the wall as it does stitched into the fabric.

Clodagh’s Teach Peace Flower Power Quilt appeared in ANPTmag Issue 57, themed Inspired by Words.

Issue 57 was created around words that carried special meaning during the Covid experience. Designers explored gratitude, comfort, family, simplicity, resilience, peace, and other thoughts that came into sharper focus during lockdown. The projects showed many ways to incorporate words and messages into quilting, sewing, knitting, embroidery, and rug hooking, using techniques such as applique, metallic threads, ribbon machine embroidery, and stitched lettering. The result was a heartfelt issue about expressing what mattered most through needlework.

Clodagh’s quilt fits that theme beautifully. Rather than relying on a written phrase, she uses one of the most familiar visual symbols of peace and surrounds it with the bright optimism of flower power. The design combines applique and patchwork in a way that makes the message impossible to miss.

I especially like quilts that say more than just “beautiful.” This one can brighten a room while quietly reminding us of the values we want to bring into it. And at 51” x 58”, it has enough presence to become a real focal point.
