This zany modern stained glass wall hanging is made using Northcott’s Stonehenge Gradations Brights – Amethyst collection of fabrics. By using the different shades in one collection paired with white and black, it creates a unique stained glass quilt.
This week we’ll look at creating six blocks in the stained glass wall hanging using three different methods. We’ll start with making 2 zany quilted stain glass blocks today.
This will be a 24” x 36” wall hanging made up of six 12″ blocks. This modern stained glass quilt will splash up any room in your house, or make a lovely gift or can be used as a table runner as well. We’re going to create two blocks using the traditional method of log cabin blocks today.
materials
- 3 fat quarters, one of black, white and a medium shade
- ½ yard of light shade
- ½ yard dark shade
- ¼ yard fusible product
- batting for 24″ x 36″ wall hanging
- 1 yard backing
Each block will have one white section in it. Block 2 cutting instructions are the same as Block 1 but the color is in parentheses at the end.
cutting instructions
Block 1:
Cut one 1½” square from the white (darkest shade).
Cut two 1” x 2½” and two 1” x 1½” rectangles from the black.
Cut two 4½” x 1½” and two 2½” x 1½” rectangles from the lightest shade (second darkest).
Cut two 5½” x 1” and two 4½” x 1” rectangles from black.
Cut two 7½” x 1½” and two 5½” x 1½” rectangles from the second darkest shade (white).
Cut 8½” x 1” and 7½” x 1” rectangles from black.
Cut two 2½” x 12½” and two 2½” x 8½” rectangles of the darkest shade (lightest shade).
Sewing
Work as you would for a log cabin block. For Block 1, start with the center 1½” square and sew right sides together (RST) the two 1” x 1½” black strips to top and bottom, press, then the two 1” x 2½” black strips to the sides.
Continue to the two 2½” x 1½” rectangles from the lightest shade on top and bottom and the two 4½” x 1½” rectangles on either side. Next is the black strips.
Add the second darkest shade, then another set of black strips and then the darkest shade. Be sure to press in between each set of strips. Repeat for Block 2 using the color choices in the parentheses.
Each block should measure 12½”.
These are the first two blocks of the Modern Stained Glass Quilted Wall Hanging. Be sure to tune in tomorrow to see how the next two blocks are made!
This is part 1 of 5 in this series.
