As promised, today we get started on quilting a funky case for sunglasses, because after a long and nasty winter, summer is about to arrive.
Materials
- Outer fabric – 5″ x 16″
- Scrap of muslin for foundation – 8″ x 20″
- Quilt batting – 8″ x 20″
- Flannel for lining – 5″ x 16″
- Contrast fabric for the closure – 5″ x 7″
- Scrap of batting for the closure – 1″ x 8″
- Scrap of green for the leaf decoration – 5″ x 7″
- Scraps of various cottons for the flower decoration
- Cute button for the flower center
- Hook and loop tape – 1″
Instructions
- Cut outer fabric and foundation muslin to measurements given.

- Cut lining to given measurements. Set the lining aside.
- Make a quilt sandwich of outer fabric, batting and foundation muslin. The batting and the muslin will be wider than the fabric. That is intentional. As you quilt, the outer fabric will change dimensions slightly.
- Using a temporary marker, on the right side of the outer fabric, draw a diagonal line from one corner to the other. Using this line as the middle, mark a series of lines a ½ inch apart diagonally across the outer fabric.
- Be sure to remove the marking lines on the fabric BEFORE you press the piece, using the method recommended by the manufacturer. If you don’t, you might find the marks a permanent part of the project. Just in case, use the lightest color that you can still see easily, and press as lightly as possible.
Draw diagonal quilting lines one way, then the other, using your preferred temporary fabric marker. This creates a diamond pattern.
- Use a contrasting thread to sew these lines. Then, mark lines across the center in the other direction. This produces a diamond pattern. Sew these lines, starting in the middle.
- Press the whole quilt sandwich. It might pucker a bit. Don’t panic, it is just a nice padded effect.
Sew along the drawn lines using a contrasting thread.
- Cut the quilted piece in half. Again, do not panic. The threads will not unravel.
Cut the outer and lining fabric in half.
- Pin the two halves together, with the right sides of the fabrics facing each other.
- Sew along one long side, the bottom and then up the other long side.
- You should now have a nice rectangular pocket.
- Cut the flannel lining piece in half and pin it together with the rights sides facing each other. Sew both long sides together, but on the short side, leave about 2 inch gap. This will be important in the next steps.
Leave a gap in the flannel lining. You’ll need it for turning.
