Sewing fabric strips on an angle for a wonky modern Log Cabin block

Yesterday on QUILTsocial I showed you how to make some modern versions of the Log Cabin block using strips cut from  Northcott’s  Artisan Spirit Shimmer and Shimmer Echoes fabrics.

Modern Log Cabin block

After making my blocks yesterday, I still had lots of my 1½”, 2½”  and 3½” strips left, so today I decided to make a different version of my modern Log Cabin block. I started with a piece about 2½” square and then sewed on one of my strips on an angle. For this type of block, it doesn’t matter what size each of the strips are. I then pressed the seam away from the center and trimmed the excess fabric from the seam allowance.

Sew the first strip to the center square on an angle.

I sewed three more strips around the center square, always on an angle, pressing and trimming off the excess fabric from each seam before adding the next strip.

Sew three more strips to the center square.

I then followed this same procedure and sewed on another round of strips so the block could be trimmed to 8½”. Sometimes you might have to sew on an extra strip or two to make the block the size you want.

Sew on another round of strips to make the block the size you need.

I placed my 8½” square ruler on an angle on top of the block and trimmed the excess fabric.

Lay a square ruler on the block and trim to desired size.

And now I have another modern Log Cabin block!

My finished 8½” block

I really love the metallic accents on the Artisan Spirit Shimmer fabrics – it just makes your blocks that much more special.

Be sure to join me tomorrow, when I’ll show you how to turn these modern Log Cabin quilt blocks into beautiful placemats!
