A long arm quilter’s experience with Fairfield Natural Cotton Quilt Batting by Elaine Theriault June 14, 2021 written by Elaine Theriault June 14, 2021 414 I was excited to quilt Claire Haillot’s quilt for the Spectrum QAL 2020. She had chosen Fairfield Natural Cotton Quilt Batting, renamed as FAIRFIELD Toasty CottonTM Natural Cotton Quilt Batting, and I noted the batting came in a bag. I tend to be a bit suspicious of packaged batting; batting squeezed that tightly into a small plastic bag tends to get stretched and can cause big problems on a long arm quilting machine. However, I noticed this batting had loads of room in the bag. Ahh, this is a good sign! Fairfield Natural Cotton Quilt Batting It’s a medium-sized batting at 72″ x 90″. The batting is designed for machine quilting, and because it has a thin synthetic scrim (like interfacing) added to help hold the batting fibers together, your quilting can be up to as much as 8″ apart without any negative effect. When I took the batting out of the bag and rolled it out on the floor, it was just slightly wrinkled. There was no need to put this one in the dryer. I loaded it right onto the long arm machine, and it quilted up like a dream. I loved working with the Fairfield Natural Cotton Quilt Batting.
