Make a Reusable Fabric Art Greeting Card for someone special

Last week, Ana Buzzalino showed us a different approach to a classic quilting shape with Making Hexagon Quilt Blocks by Machine. This week, I’m moving from quilt blocks to something much smaller, and with the holidays coming, the timing couldn’t be better! Heather McArthur’s Reusable Fabric Art Greeting Card is the perfect project to start now if you want to get ahead of your holiday making and avoid the last-minute rush.

There is something especially lovely about receiving a handmade card in the mail. Heather takes that idea one step further by creating a fabric greeting card that becomes a little piece of art in its own right. Because the card is reusable, the recipient can enjoy it and then pass it along. Heather includes three different ways to create the front using quilting techniques, so you can make each card as individual as the person receiving it.

Heather’s Reusable Fabric Art Greeting Card appeared in ANPTmag Issue 66, an issue devoted to fabric postcards, tactile messages, and the joy of sending something handmade through the mail.

Issue 66 celebrated fabric postcards as miniature works of art and wonderful little canvases for experimenting with techniques. In a world where so much communication happens digitally, receiving fabric, stitching, and creativity someone made just for you feels especially special. The issue explored plenty of ways to play with fabric, thread, embellishment, quilting, and other needlework techniques on a small scale.

These projects are manageable, personal, and perfect for sharing a little handmade happiness with someone you care about.

Heather’s card fits that spirit perfectly. The pattern gives you three options for designing the front: flip ‘n’ stitch, crazy quilting, and raw edge applique. That means you can make several cards without making them all the same. Change the fabrics, colors, motifs, and embellishments and suddenly one pattern can become Christmas cards, birthday cards, thank you cards, or something made simply to tell someone you’re thinking of them.

Now is such a good time to start! Making one or two cards at a relaxed pace in October sounds much more appealing to me than realizing in December that I wanted to make handmade cards and running out of time! They’re small enough to fit between larger projects, and they give you another wonderful reason to look through those treasured fabric scraps.

Who in your life would be delighted to find a handmade fabric card waiting in their mailbox?
