Piecing Artisan Spirit Sandscapes fabrics to highlight the Mountain Peak panel

Yesterday I introduced you to the Sandscapes collection and the accompanying panels from Northcott.

Today I’ll give you some tips on using the Mountain Peak panel and adding a pieced border to make this quilt.

This Mountain Peak quilt will be 35½” x 55½” when finished. Here’s how to get started.

material

• 1 Mountain Peak panel by Northcott
• ⅝ yd dark green Sandscapes by Northcott for the inner border and binding
• ⅛ yd of each of dark blue and 2 medium blue Sandscapes for the pieced blocks
• ⅝ yd light blue Sandscapes for the border

TIP 1 Often when you buy a panel it’s not perfectly straight, so it’s very important to straighten the edges to make sure that your borders will be straight and flat. There’s also some extra fabric around the edges of a panel that needs to be removed.

Trim the Mountain Peak panel so it measures 22½” x 42½”.

For the inner border cut 2 – 1″ x 23½” and 2 – 1″ x 42½” strips from dark green Sandscapes fabric.

I used 3 different blue Sandscapes fabric plus some dark green for the pieced border blocks.

TIP 2 When cutting the strips for the blocks, I like to cut so the longest measurement is on the lengthwise grain of the fabric. This helps to keep the strips straight when sewing.

From the darkest blue cut 4 – 2½” x 6½” and 4 – 2½” x 2½”.

From each of 2 different medium blues cut 8 – 2½” x 6½” and 8 – 2½” x 2½”.

From dark green cut 10 – 2½” x 2½” for the centers of the blocks.

From light blue cut 2 – 6½” x 17½” and 2 – 6½” x 31½” for the outer borders.

From dark green Sandscapes cut 2 – 1″ x 42½” and 2 – 1″ x 23½” strips for the inner border.

Sew a 1″ x 42½” green strip to each side of the panel. Press seam toward border.

Sew a 1″ x 23½” green strip to the top and bottom. Press.

For each border block, you need 1 – 2½” green square, 2 – 2½” blue squares and 2 – 2½” x 6½” blue strips.

Sew a 2½” green square to 2 – 2½” blue squares. Press seams toward blue.

Sew a 2½” x 6½” blue strip to each side of this center section. Press seams toward blue.

Your block should measure 6½” x 6½”.

Make 2 dark blue blocks and 2 blocks of each medium blue.

Sew 1 dark blue and 2 medium blue blocks to each 6½” x 17½” light blue strip to make the top and bottom borders.

Sew 2 medium blue blocks to each 6½” x 31½” light blue strip to make the side borders.

Sew the side borders on first and then the top and bottom borders.

I think you’ll agree that this Northcott Sandscapes fabric with its touches of metallic adds just the right touch to this quilt!

I like to use a ½” finished size binding for my quilts. If you’d like to try this, cut 5 binding strips 3″ wide from the remaining dark green Sandscapes fabric. When trimming the quilt after the quilting is finished, make sure to leave ¼” of batting and backing all around the outside edges of the quilt. Then sew on the binding with a ½” seam.
