Presenting QAL2020 – Spectrum Block 12

Outline of Spectrum Block 12

Here are the cutting instructions for Block 12 of the Quilt-Along. In this block, you might want to fussy cut the E and F squares. Centering a design in each square and also ensuring the colors you want to feature are well balanced really does make a difference in the final outcome.

Let’s start with some Flying Geese blocks. If you feel like you need more information on how to make them, you can read my blog post on 4 best kept secrets to perfecting the flying geese quilt block.

Step 1

  • Take your (8) D squares and, on wrong side of fabric, mark a full line diagonally in the center as well as two dotted lines at ¼” on each side of the center line.
  • Take (2) D squares and align diagonally on a B square.
  • Stitch on the two dotted lines.
  • Cut on the full line to make 2 units.
  • Repeat to make 4 units.

Step 1

Step 2

  • Take a D square and align on the corner of a Step 1 unit.
  • Stitch on the two dotted lines, beginning on the corner edge to ensure stability.
  • Cut on full line.
  • Makes 2 flying geese rectangles size 2″ x 3 ½”.
  • Press the triangle open on each unit.
  • Repeat to make 8 units.

Step 2

Step 3

  • Stitch a Step 2 unit to an A square.
  • Makes a 2″ x 5″ rectangle.
  • Repeat to make 4.

Step 3

Step 4

  • Repeat to make 4.

Step 4

Step 5

  • Makes a 5″ square.
  • Repeat to make 4.

Step 5

Step 6

  • Take a G1 and G2 triangle and stitch on opposite ends of an F square. Note: I recommend finding the center of your F square edge and aligning to the center of the hypotenuse of the triangle for a perfect alignment.
  • Press and open triangles.
  • Repeat to with your (4) F squares.

Step 6

Step 7

  • Take one more G1 and G2 triangle and stitch on the other two opposite ends of your Step 6 unit. Note: I recommend finding the center of your F square edge (of Step 6 unit) and aligning to the center of the hypotenuse of the triangle for a perfect alignment.
  • Press and open triangles (trim off excess).
  • Makes a 3½” square.
  • Repeat to make 4.

Step 7

Step 8

  • Stitch a Step 7 unit to a C rectangle. **Ensure the C rectangle is stitched on the edge of your G1 triangles. **
  • Makes a 3½” x 5″ rectangle.
  • Repeat to make 4.

Step 8

Step 9

  • Stitch (2) Step 5 units to your Step 8 unit. **Ensure your G1 and G2 triangles are positioned correctly (referring to Step 8). **
  • Makes a 5″ x 12½” rectangle.
  • Repeat to make 2.

Step 9

Step 10

  • Stitch (2) Step 8 units to your E1 square. **Ensure your G1 and G2 triangles are positioned correctly (referring to Step 8). **
  • Makes a 3½” x 12½” rectangle.

You’ve just completed the last block of the Spectrum QAL2020! Be a part of our sewing and quilting community by adding #TheSewGoesOn when showing off your blocks on Facebook or Instagram. We all enjoy seeing the great blocks and quilts being made!

And I’ll see you in two weeks to reveal how I placed the blocks to make my bed runner. In the meantime, don’t miss next week’s posts by Paul and Elaine. They’ll be showing their version of Block 12 using their very own choice of fabrics. Elaine is using fabrics from the Blue Stitch by Riley Blake Designs while Paul is using the Wave Texture from Benartex. Same design, completely different look!
