Spectrum QAL Block 9 with Pam Voth: Delightful Collection by Riley Blake

I’m Pam Voth, and I’m back with Block 9 of the Spectrum QAL on QUILTsocial. I’m completing my blocks using fabric from the Delightful Collection by Riley Blake. Here are the full instructions on how to make Spectrum QAL Block 9.

Pam’s Version of Block 9 from the Spectrum QAL

Creating the diamond design in the center of the block was the first step. Sewing the triangles to the edges of the center block mirrored the creation of flying geese. The outer square was created by carefully matching the triangles from the first set of flying geese. The chevrons created by the final flying geese create a star pattern. I chose to highlight the corners and the center with a dark fabric.

I pieced the strip down the center first and then sewed the corners together. The corners were a simple combination of half-square triangles and 2½” squares. The triangles surrounding the center block were highlighted by using the same color for the inner square of the corner. I sewed the top and bottom strips together and pieced the three sections together using my 5-stitch trick to match the seams as carefully as possible.

I’m now starting to think about how I’ll finish off my quilt. I don’t have a long arm quilting machine and it is often costly to send your quilt away to be finished, so I often use the quilt-as-you-go method for completing my quilt. In this case, I didn’t do it all the way along, but I’ll add batting and backing to each block, pin, and then use the geometric designs to machine quilt to create the finished product. This is a great option for the beginning quilter. Don’t be afraid to give it a try! Your confidence builds as you go and starting with quilt blocks that have a lot of straight lines is really a great way to begin. You don’t have to worry about curves or circles or shapes. In the upcoming blog post, I’ll video machine quilting so that you can see how straight-forward and rewarding it can be.

So, please take the time to connect with me and share your version of Block 9 by posting it with #TheSewGoesOn. Be sure to check out my version of the Spectrum QAL Block 8 as well.
