If you’re anything like me, you love to add applique to embroidery, not only does it make it interesting it cuts the stitch-out time down so you can get your project done quicker and work on the next masterpiece. I had a great time creating this project on my Brother Luminaire XP2 and couldn’t wait to stitch it out.
Let’s boot this baby up and follow me on this journey to amazing creations. Once you learn this technique you’ll be hooked and will be well on your way to creating your masterpieces. I thought a graduation mortarboard would be appropriate as graduations are just around the corner. You can apply this finished embroidery to any project such as a quilt piece or a cushion as I did.

Ok, enough talk and let’s get to creating. In today’s post, I’m going to use the scanning features that the Brother Luminaire XP2 has to offer. Once the machine has booted up and the home screen appears, select the My Design Center Function.
Print off the image of the mortarboard provided and place the copy on your scanning frame provided with the machine. Be sure to place the green magnets along the top of the image as well as the sides and bottom and attach the frame as you would the embroidery hoop.

At the Brother Luminaire XP2 select the Scan icon > select Line Design > select scan > select OK > the machine will scan the image with the built-in camera, this will take about 50 seconds and the image will appear on the screen!

Using the touch pen provided in the accessory box of the Brother Luminaire XP2 place the soft tip of the pen on one of the arrows on the screen putting a little pressure and drag the arrow framing a red box around the image. You will hear a beep when the pen makes contact, then move the pen in sequence with the arrow.
HINT for best results be sure the pen is placed at a straight angle. Don’t worry if you get some of the magnet images inside of the box it can be cleaned up.

Once the image has finished loading select SET.
Select the eraser icon at the right of the screen, and a new window will open for you to select the tip as well as the size.
Start with the default settings, select OK and place the pen on the area where you wish to erase and rub away like a pencil eraser.
Once it is all cleaned up save your work.
At the bottom of the screen select Memory > select the picture of the sewing machine icon. The scanned image is now saved to the machine’s memory!
Here is a photo of the finished appliqued project. I made an accent cushion; you can make a quilt block for a quilted project.
