Spectrum QAL Block 7 with Pam Voth: Delightful Collection by Riley Blake by Pam Voth November 1, 2021 written by Pam Voth November 1, 2021 329 I’m Pam Voth, and I’m back with Block 7 of the Spectrum QAL on QUILTsocial. I’m completing my blocks using fabric from the Delightful collection by Riley Blake. Pam’s version of Block 7 from the Spectrum QAL Block 7 started with the creation of the center square, a unique combination of half square triangles that created a framed diamond shape design. I continue to practice creating points. It’s such an important part of quilting. It’s so satisfying to be able to create and attach squares and designs to each other while still preserving that beautiful point. We always have a moment of silence at our quilting group when someone says that they are going to lose their point. It inevitably happens but, as you get more experienced as a quilter, you find ways to ensure that you keep them. The chevrons are a great addition to this block. First of all, it was a new technique and that adds to the challenge of quilting. In addition to half-square triangles and flying geese, you learn how to use your half-square triangles to create this chevron design. I assembled the center block first and then I created the chevron blocks. I sewed the top of the chevron to create the blue triangle and then I sewed the bottom half-squared triangles to create the bottom flowered triangle. Then I sewed them together. I created the four chevron blocks, and then the four corner blocks and then put them together in three sections to form the block. It is so important to line up your blocks right sides together and then open them up before pinning and sewing to ensure that you have everything in the right place. It is so easy to get things switched around. As the carpenters say, measure twice and cut once – I say check twice, sew once. For me, it is the same for measuring and cutting, I always check twice and then cut. It helps you avoid wasting fabric and makes the completion of your project move along faster. You spend a lot less time thinking, how did I do that, and a lot more time sewing. So, please take the time to connect with me, and share your version of Block 7 by posting it with #TheSewGoesOn. Be sure to check out my version of the Spectrum QAL Block 6 as well. Cooking and baking, as well as knitting, had been an outlet for her creativity, but she was ready for a challenge. Pam's mom had been an expert sewer which scared Pam off. Retirement opened the door to explore quilting in the company of a retired friend, and they started their Wednesday mornings 'Quilt Social'. It's her goal to share her new found joy for quilting, a craft she never imagined being successful at, and in turn inspire others to give it a try. Pam is a lifelong learner, a beginner quilter and a great believer that connecting with others in a positive way makes all the difference in life. previous post Connecting the pieces to complete a reversible quilted banner next post FREE!
